About Suzanne
Warm enough to sit with you. Direct enough to tell you what I see.
I became a therapist because I know what it costs to hold everything together, and what it takes to put some of it down. My work is equal parts comfort and challenge, and my clients usually come to value both.
The root of how I work
I grew up in West Virginia, the daughter of a coal miner. In my family, mining and miners’ rights were not an abstraction. They were the daily reality of work that is hard, necessary, and mostly invisible to the people who benefit from it.
That history shapes how I sit with clients. I respect the gravity of trauma and transitions. I don’t rush to reframe it, spiritualize it, or tidy it up. And I believe something my father’s work taught me early: what forms under pressure is not only damage. Given the right conditions, pressure is also what forms something extraordinary.
That belief is why my practice is organized around the idea of being rooted: getting underneath the symptom to what is actually holding you, and working there.
Given the right conditions, pressure is also what forms something extraordinary.
How I think about therapy
Three things I believe about this work
Understanding is not the same as changing.
Insight matters, but most of my clients arrive already fluent in their own story. The work is helping the nervous system catch up to what the mind already knows.
You are not the problem you came in with.
Anxiety, over-functioning, self-criticism: these are parts of your experience with histories and reasons. We get curious about them instead of declaring war on them.
Therapy should be honest, including about itself.
I will tell you what I think is happening, what I recommend, how long I believe it will take, and when I am not the right fit. You are trusting me with real things; you deserve candor in return.
